Electrical Safety Education

If you are a do-it-yourself type, you are probably familiar with the steps involved in taking on a home project. One piece that many newbies may not take into account is what effect their projects may have on their home’s electrical system. Picture it: drilling into a wall and BOOM! You’ve taken out an important piece of wiring, possibly starting a fire or causing you injury. Do you know where to turn for electrical safety education?

Electrical Safety Education

Enter: The Electrical Safety Foundation International. EFCI is a non-profit organization committed to promoting electrical safety education. Funded by electrical manufacturers, distributors, trade and labor associations, independent testing laboratories, utilities and safety and consumer organizations, ESFI is dedicated to reducing the annual number of electrical fires and injuries through education and outreach. ESFI has an entire section on their web page dedicated to home electrical safety education, offering information for not only the home do-it-yourselfer, but everyone.

While we are always happy to answer your questions about your electrical projects, providing you with resources to help yourself is equally as important to us. We care about our customer’s health and safety.

ESFI’s Best:

One of our favorite things about ESFI’s outreach is their how accessible they are on the web. ESFI offers downloadable and printable instructions, video shorts, and safety booklets for all kinds of electrical safety education. Here are a few of our favorites:

  • Counterfeit Chargers: You may have heard a few news stories recently about cell phones shorting out, overheating and catching fire due to off-market or counterfeit chargers. Learn what to watch for here: 10 Tips To Help You Buy The Real Deal.
  • How To Test a GFCI: Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters protect you from shock or electrocution. They can get damaged for a variety of reasons. Find out how to test your GFCI’s with this downloadable reference guide.
  • ESFI’s Kid’s Corner: ESFI dedicates resources to electrical safety education for children through educational programs, and it’s own interactive website, ESFI’s Kid’s Corner.
  • And…our favorite: Electrical Safety Workbook. The safety workbook is a detailed guide for the home do-it-yourselfer.  The workbook covers topics such as, “When To Hire Someone,” “Does This Need A Permit?” and “What Kind Of Wiring System Is In My Home?”
